When you can't make changes to files and data on USB flash drives, SD card, internal or external HDD/SSD and get a message stating “The disk is write-protected. Remove the write-protection or use another disk”, it's time to remove write protection.

Overview of USB Write Protection

Basically, people add write protection to protect data on a storage device from being modified or erased. However, sometimes, storage devices USB flash drive, SD card, internal or external hard disk may become write-protected due to the following reasons:

  • The physical switch of the USB is on the Lock side.
  • USB is set as Read-Only by mistake.
  • Third-party encryption software or virus locked USB as write-protected.
  • BitLocker protection partition is turned on USB volume.

What does it mean when a USB is write protected? Once your USB flash disk, SD card, internal or external hard drive is write-protected, it means that your device is unavailable for making any changes, such as add files, remove saved data, or format the drive. The only way out is to remove write protection.

How to Remove Write Protection from USB in Windows 10/8/7

Here in this part, you'll find five methods to remove and disable write protection on a hard drive, USB or SD card, etc in Windows 10/8/7 computers. We will take USB as an example to show you the whole process of clearing device write protection from the bottom to the top.

Method 1. Remove Write Protection from USB/SD with Lock Switch

In order to protect data security on USB or SD card, some manufacturers would add a switch on the device. Once the USB drive or SD card switch is locked, the device will become write-protected on all PC or devices.

Note that if your USB doesn't have a switch, move to Method 2 to remove the write protection.

Let's see how to use the physical switch to remove the protection on your USB now. You won't lose any data on your SD or USB flash drive:

Step 1. Find the physical switch on your USB or SD card.

Step 2. Turn the physical switch from ON to OFF and unlock the device.

Step 3. Connect the USB or SD card to your computer and check if the write-protected state is gone.

If you can't access the saved data or the system still warns your USB is with a write protection error, follow Method 2 to fix this error.

Method 2. Clear Write Protection on USB via Apply Diskpart Command

This option applies to disable and clear read only (namely write protection) on an internal or external hard drive, and it also works on a USB flash drive or SD card.

Let's see how to use Diskpart command line fix this issue now:

Step 1. Press “Win + R”, type cmd to open “Command Prompt”.

Step 2. Type diskpart and hit Enter.

Step 3. Type list disk and hit Enter.

Step 4. Type select disk 2 and hit Enter.(Replace 0 with the write-protected device number) and hit Enter.

Step 5. Type attributes disk clear readonly and hit Enter.

Step 6. Type exit to close the diskpart window once the write protection removing process completes.

After this, restart your PC and check if you can access and use the saved data on your USB or hard drive again.

«Disk Is Write Protected»:

Please remove the write protection  /  Windows 10  /  Windows 7  /  Windows 8  /  «Disk Is Write Protected»:

2018 itpro Windows 10, Windows 7, Windows 8

The disk is write protected.
Remove the write-protection or use another disk

Lock

Off (Unlock).

  2. Перейдите в раздел HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\RemovableStorageDevices\{53f5630d-b6bf-11d0-94f2-00a0c91e8b}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies

Diskpart
Disk 1
Current Read-only State : YesRead-only : YesBoot Disk : NoPagefile Disk : NoHibernation File Disk : NoCrashdump Disk : No

    Clustered Disk : No

  7. Строки Current Read-only State : Yes и Read-only : Yes говорят о том, что для диска установлен атрибут «Только на чтение». Очистим его: attributes disk clear readonly

Transcend

Total Commander

Please remove the write protection

Total Commander

Total Commander.

How to Remove Write Protection on Windows 10, 8, and 7

Please remove the write protection

  • Look for a lock switch on the USB drive or SD card and turn it to the off position.
  • Alternatively, use the diskpart command, or change the WriteProtect value in the Windows Registry Editor to 0.
  • For individual files, go to the file's Properties and clear the Read-only check box.

This article explains how to remove write protection from a USB drive, SD card, or individual files. Instructions apply to Windows 10, Windows 8, and Windows 7.

If your computer tells you the media is write-protected, look for a write protection switch (also called a lock switch) on the USB or SD card. If the media has this switch, make sure the switch is set to write, not read-only.

When you have a single file you want to make changes to but can’t, the file may be write-protected. Here's how to grant writing permissions.

  1. Insert the USB drive or SD card into the appropriate port on your computer.

  2. Open Windows File Explorer.

  3. Navigate to the device and folder containing the file.

  4. Select the file.

  5. Select the Home tab, then select Properties >Properties.

  6. In the Properties dialog box, select Read-only to remove the check mark.

  7. Select OK.

There are many ways to remove write protection from USB drives in Windows. One popular method is to change a Registry key, but this is scary to some people. A less intimidating method is to use diskpart.

  1. Insert the USB drive into a USB port on your computer.

  2. Press Windows key+X.

  3. Select Run.

  4. Enter diskpart andthen select OK.

The User Account Control dialog box may appear and ask if you want to allow this app to make changes to your device. Select Yes to continue.

  5. Next to DISKPART>, enter list disk and press Enter.

  6. In the list of mounted disks, find your USB drive and note the disk number.

Look at the Size column to locate the write-protected flash drive. In this example, the computer hard drive is 29 GB and the USB drive is 977 MB.

  7. Enter the command select disk disk_number and then press Enter. If, for example, your drive number is 1, enter select disk 1.

  8. When the disk is selected, diskpart displays a message saying the disk is now the selected disk.

  9. Enter the command attributes disk clear readonly and then press Enter.

  10. When write protection has been removed from the disk, diskpart displays a message stating the attributes were cleared successfully and the disk is no longer write protected.

  11. To close the diskpart window when you're finished, type exit and press Enter.

If you'd rather use the Windows Registry to remove write protection from a USB drive or SD card, use regedit to make the change.

  1. Insert the USB drive into a USB port on your computer.

  2. Press the Windows key+X.

  3. Select Run.

  4. Enter regedit and select OK.

  5. In the Registry Editor, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE >SYSTEM >CurrentControlSet >Control >StorageDevicePolicies.

If you can't find the StorageDevicePolicies folder, you'll need to create a StorageDevicesPolicies key and a WriteProtect DWORD Value. Keep reading to learn how.

  6. Double-click WriteProtect to open the Edit DWORD dialog box.

  7. In the Value data text box, replace the number with a 0 (zero).

  8. Select OK.

  9. Close regedit.

  10. Restart your computer.

  1. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE >SYSTEM >CurrentControlSet >Control.

  2. In the File pane on the right, right-click in an empty space, point to New, then select Key.

  3. In the Folders pane on the left, name the key StorageDevicePolicies and press Enter.

  4. In the Folders pane, select StorageDevicePolicies.

  5. In the File pane, right-click an empty space, point to New, then select DWORD (32-bit) Value.

  6. Name the value WriteProtect and press Enter.

  7. Double-click WriteProtect to open the Edit DWORD dialog box and remove write protection using the steps above.

If you use Windows 7, the process to edit the Windows Registry to remove write protection is a little different.

  1. Press Windows key+R.

  2. In the Run dialog box, enter regedit and press Enter.

  3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE >SYSTEM >CurrentControlSet >Services.

  4. Select USBSTOR.

  5. Double-click Start.

  6. In the dialog box, enter 3.

  7. Close the Registry Editor.

When a USB drive or SD card is write-protected, you can't change files on the media; you can only view them. On write-protected media, you can read and copy files, but you can't write to and delete files. Your USB drive and SD cards may become write protected because of a virus, or because the lock switch on the media has been enabled.

  • Right click on the white space at the right-hand pane and choose “New”-> “DWORD (32-bit) value”. Name it with WriteProtect. And then,double-click on it to check if the Value data is set to 0.

Step 4. Format write-protected USB drive with free partition manager

If you've tried all steps above and still can't remove write protection from USB drive, the reason might be corrupted file system. To settle out it, you can try to format the USB drive. The problem is how to format a write-protection USB?

AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard is a free partition manager software and disk management tool forcomputers running 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 10, Windows 8.1/8, Windows 7,Vista and XP. It supports the all types of disk, including mechanical hard drive,SSD, SSHD, external hard drive, USB flash drive, SD card, etc. It enables you to format a USB drive easily and quickly.

To enjoy more advanced features, such as recover lost partition, clone GPT system disk, convert dynamic disk into basic, etc., you can upgrade it to Professional version.

Note:Formatting a USB will delete all data on it.Therefore, make sure that you backup all the data from USB drive to your computer.

4.1. Free download, install and launchAOMEI Partition Assistant Standard. Right click on the USB partition and select “FormatPartition“.

4.2. In the pop-up window, you can name the USB drive by editting “PartitionLabel” and change file system.

By default, a USB drive is formatted as FAT32,which ensures cross-platform compatibility. However, FAT32 limits a single file sizeup to 4GB.

If you would to store larger files on your USB flash drive, youshould format it to NTFS. And then, click “OK” to continue.

4.3. Your USB has not been formatted yet. To save the change, you need to click”Apply“.

The formatting progress shouldn't take too much time. Of course, the more data onthe USB, the more time the formatting will take. If there is no physical damage orbad sectors with the USB drive, it will be formatted, cleaned and writeable.

Since the reasons for write protection USB are different, some step may fail toremove write protection from USB drive. If so, please skip the step to try next step. All the steps apply to remove write protection from SD card.

Tips: Besides USB flash drive, the popular cloud drive is also a good choicefor data storage, Google Drive, OneDrive and Dropbox. Being troubled to managethe multiple cloud drives? There is a free multi clouds manager – MultCloud whichcan help with that, such as directly transfer filesfrom Google Drive to OneDrive.
